A key component of the action plan is the creation of a new decentralized “Robotics Institute Germany”. This institute will network the top locations for robotics research in the country and is intended to be expanded into a talent factory through targeted training and further education measures. The BMBF currently supports research into robotics with a total of over 40 million euros per year. This funding supports projects ranging from AI-based robotics algorithms and innovative sensors to intelligent robots for trades, service robots to relieve the burden on carers, and rescue robots. Germany is the largest robotics market in Europe and has the fourth highest density of robots in the world. The BMBF believes that cross-industry flexible automation through AI-based robotics will be essential for securing and strengthening Germany’s competitiveness in the future. The market potential for robotics is estimated at 260 billion euros in 2030, with additional leverage on other industrial sectors.
