Setting up a Cross-disciplinary National Research Data Infrastructure is progressing

The German Government’s work of setting up a Cross-disciplinary National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) has taken further steps to reach the project’s goal. That is to form a digital cross-disciplinary knowledge repository for the entire German scientific and research landscape. 

Federal Research Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger explains:

“Research data is a treasure that has not yet been properly unearthed in this country. With the National Research Data Infrastructure we want to change that by making scientific results from different sources, locations and domains more accessible and usable.” 

National Research Data Infrastructure – a background

NFDI is being funded by the federal and state governments in a ratio of 90:10 with up to 90 million euros annually in the period from 2019 to 2028. It is supported by the NFDI eV based in Karlsruhe. Where eight new consortia were included March 2023 to the already available 19 consortia. Where the NFDI is the organization officially mandated by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) to contribute to the implementation of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) at European level.

The project aim is to create the best conditions for new knowledge and innovative applications. This includes participation of several hundred universities, research institutions and data centers will make a decisive contribution to developing the NFDI into a flagship project with international appeal for the innovative handling of research data. In addition, collaboration with the private sector will also play an important role in this.
