The Norwegian government is investing €120 million in digital technology and artificial intelligence research over the next five years. The goal is to ensure that Norway remains a leader in these fields and that the development of AI is aligned with Norwegian values.

The research will focus on three main areas:

  • The consequences of AI and digital technology for society, including issues such as democracy, trust, ethics, and privacy.
  • The development of new AI technologies, such as digital security, next-generation ICT, and quantum technology.
  • The use of AI for innovation in business and the public sector.

Digital technologies and Artificial Intelligence Research according to Norwegian values

“Artificial intelligence and machine learning are going to change society in ways we still don’t understand or can control,” said Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. “Strengthening the research effort is crucial for us to ensure that development takes place in a way that is in line with our values as a society.”

The government is also working on other measures to support the development of AI in Norway. These include initiatives to attract talent, build infrastructure, and promote collaboration between businesses, universities, and research institutions.

The research is expected to develop new AI technologies that can be used to address some of the world’s biggest challenges, such as climate change and poverty.
