UK Prime Minister David Cameron announced a new direction and structure of the whole school-system in order to improve the performance. He said that power should be in the hands of headteachers and teachers, not bureaucrats. This will be made possible by transforming the traditional structure of schools into academies. An Academy is independent, state-funded schools that operate outside of local authority control. They receive funding directly from the government, but are also allowed to be sponsored by businesses, universities, other schools, faith groups or voluntary groups. The day-to-day running of academies remains the responsibility of head teachers or principals and they do not have to follow the national curriculum. Source: BBC
