Cognitive training improves innovative thinking among older adults, that is the main conclusion of a new research project of the Center for BrainHealth at the University of Texas at Dallas. Earlier research has shown that innovative thinking declines even before young adulthood and it may worsen with increasing age. However, with learning strategies that is focusing on attention, reasoning and multiple perspective focus, this decline can be reversed, according to the research. 140 participants between the age of 56 to 75 years old participated in the project where the cognitive training was performed with the SMART-program developed by the Center for BrainHealth that focus on the skills mentioned above as SMART stands for Strategic Memory Advanced Reasoning Training. The researcher Dr. Sandra Bond Chapman explained the result for Science Daily in the following way: “In addition to evaluating the effects of the cognitive training, this study also provided an opportunity to test a reliable assessment tool to measure innovative cognition, which has been relatively neglected due to the complexity of quantifying innovative thinking.” Source: Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience and Science Daily
