Shimon is a robot at the Center of Music Technology and School of Music, Georgia Institute of Technology, with the ability write and play its own music compositions. With the force of artificial intelligence and deep learning it autonomously without human interference selects bits from 5000 complete song compositions ranging from Beethoven to Lady Gaga. The first two compositions is now published on YouTube with Shimon playing with its four arms https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j82nYLOnKtM and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MSk5PP9KUA. PhD student Mason Bretan started the development seven years ago, he explains: “Shimon’s compositions represent how music sounds and looks when a robot uses deep neural networks to learn everything it knows about music from millions of human-made segments.” According to Bretan it is the first time a robot independently have managed to produce its own music. Bretan’s advisor, Gil Weinberg, director of Georgia Tech’s Center for Music Technology continues: “We want to explore whether robots could become musically creative and generate new music that we humans could find beautiful, inspiring and strange.” Source: Georgia Tech News Center
