Information overflows us, to select the data of importance and to reject everything else, is a necessity to handle the prerequisites of the digital society. This also requires new multitasking skills and knowledge to boost the performance in the working life as well as the everyday life. The research presented below brings some of the basics of the requirements in the digital world.
Multitasking Skills requirements
Research published in Human Factors: The Journal of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society by Meike Jipp, a researcher at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), describes a correlation between an operator’s working memory and ability to sustain attention and a phenomenon known as cognitive lock-up. The study is based on the reaction time, working-memory ability and sustained attention ability of 85 students (18-39 years old). They monitored a simulated flight display and engine warning display similar to those in the Airbus A320. Monitoring of systems often requires multitasking skills. The results show that “individuals with better working memory not only were able to correct an initial system failure quickly. But also could switch their attention to secondary failures more quickly.”
Vocational Education and Training to become Digital
The German Federal Institute for Vocational Training (BIBB) and TNS interviewed 3000 companies in Germany on the use of digital media. The result provides an overview of the current use of digital media by industry, company size classes and regions in the vocational education and training. Federal Education Minister Johanna Wanka makes the following conclusion of the result: “We need a vocational training 4.0. The BMBF (German Ministry of Education) therefore places special emphasis on promoting digitization in vocational training to small and medium enterprises.”
The pilot’s multitasking and cognitive flexibility skills will be vital in most professions to some degree. As they turn to more and more monitoring. The basic training to improve these skills is attention- and working memory training.
