In an age where originality is hard-currency and where everything that starts with “mass” is seen as a gust from the past. Designers often are what stands between market success and failure. It is an environment where intuition and preferences should be fed with a pleasant experience. Not like before when everybody was offered more of the same thing as everybody else. This means that the image of the starving artist of 20th Century. Now has endless opportunities for a very prosperous future in the business world both as an employee and as an independent designer company startup. A Gartner Research report shows that 89% of the companies believe that customer experience will be their primary basis for competition, versus 36% seven years ago. Design studies are the main road to open up these extraordinary opportunities of the digital age.

In this spirit Learning Design is one of the most interesting fields in the progressing digital society. A society that also has been termed the knowledge-based society.

Learning Design as a Driver of Success

70/20/10, these numbers are magic in the field of workable learning design. The model 70/20/10 was created by researchers at the Center for Creative Leadership and state that a learning environment should consist of 70% direct work-related exercises, 20% interaction with other learners and 10% formal education. The model is based on research of successful managers and besides leadership education. It also often works as a great guide for learning design of lifelong learning in general. As well as formal school education as digital tools and the requirements of the digital society make school adopt more of the working life’s pedagogy.

Five basic elements for successful technology-enhanced learning design

  1. Motivation where the learner needs to know why they should invest time and effort to complete a course, e.g. knowledge development to reach goals in the working life or private, including receiving certification when the course is completed.
  2. Stimulus, how to use this driving force depends on which the target group for the education is, e.g. which purpose and educational level. The magic to make Learning Design really effective is to offer manifold learning paths that connect to the learner’s individual learning styles. This includes different forms of elements like graphics, feedback, slideshows, video, sound etc. etc. to enhance the learning experience.
  3. The possibility for the learner to apply what they have learned,
  4. Evaluation and feedback
  5. Reward
