New research from the University of Texas at Dallas published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology shows that memory training with unpredictable components could be more effective in enhancing episodic memory than training with predictable elements. 46 people between 60 to 86 years old participated in the research project. They were divided into two groups one for predictable training and one for unpredictable training. The groups were presented an equivalent story to recall before training. Tests were performed before memory training, immediately after training and one and a half months after completing the training. The results show that the group given training with the unpredictable element was able to retell the previously heard story more accurately than the other group.
