Copyright Rules Fit For Digital Era In Europe

Yesterday, the European Parliament, the Council of the EU and the Commission reached a political agreement. To adapt the copyright rules to the digital single market. The focus has been directed on improving the conditions for all creative sectors. In the light of the tech development e.g. music streaming services, video-on-demand platforms, news aggregators and user-uploaded-content platforms. Commissioner Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society, commented in the following way:

“The long awaited Copyright Directive adoption is a crucial cornerstone for our Digital Single Market. By providing a clearer legal framework fit for the digital world. It will strengthen the cultural and creative sectors, and bring added value to the European citizens.”

The agreement includes better protection for European authors, performers and journalists. For instance 1. the principle of an appropriate and proportionate remuneration for authors and performers. Where Authors and performers will enjoy access to transparent information on how their works and performances are exploited by their counterparts (publishers and producers). 2. European press publishers will enjoy new rights. With the aims to facilitate the way, they negotiate how their content is re-used on online platforms.

It also includes new licensing rules for the benefit of citizens and internet users. This will make it possible to upload copyrighted content on e.g. Youtube legally. After formally have been confirmed by the European Parliament and the Council. The Member States will have 24 months to implement the new rules into their national legislation.
