The EU Commission’s ambitions plan to develop a European Education Area is taking shape. Before the EU meeting in Gothenburg November 17 the EU Commission now is presenting eleven points for further integration and to inject the spirit of success stories like student exchange programmes like Erasmus+ to build a European Education Area. The purpose is that the EU Commission believes that education and culture can be important tools to fight several of Europe’s future challenges. Like for instance, an ageing workforce, continued digitalisation and the future needs for skills. But also the need to promote critical thinking and media literacy in an era where “alternative news” and disinformation is occupying areas of the web. And in this spirit fostering a greater sense of identifying and fight populism and xenophobia. The eleven points to develop a European Education Area includes an EU Student Card to offer a new user-friendly way to store information on a person’s EU academic records (probably with blockchain technology) to simplify and boost crossborder mobility even further, which also includes mutual recognition of diplomas. Promoting lifelong learning, preparing for a new digital educational action plan and increase collaboration between European universities is some important parts to develop the European educational landscape for the 21th Century. The goal that all EU Member States should invest 5% of the GDP in education is not only promising but necessary to reach if Europe should continue to be a leader in the international society. Especially when it comes to innovation, invention, entrepreneurship and growth. Source: Press Release European Commission
